Who this is for

Visitors making their first few journeys in Beijing or Shanghai. Start with a straightforward trip in daylight, when you have time to learn the signs and payment steps.

Before you leave

Save the destination’s full Chinese name and address. Check the correct entrance, not just the nearest map pin. Take a screenshot of the route and the return route to your hotel.

Keep a backup way to pay. A regular payment QR code and a transport QR code are different; an app may require a separate transport setup for each city.

Taking the metro

1. Identify your origin, destination, transfer stations and the direction of travel. Use the line number and the terminal station to check the platform.
2. At the station, choose an accepted ticket or payment method shown on the signs. Shanghai’s official guide describes ticket and app-based options; check the current instructions for the system you are using.
3. If using an app, select the correct city and activate its transport function before reaching the gate.
4. Keep the same ticket or accepted payment method ready at your destination. Ask staff before switching methods mid-journey.
5. Check the exit number that best matches your destination, particularly at large stations.

Taking a taxi or booked car

At an airport or station, follow signs to the official taxi rank. Show the hotel’s Chinese address before the journey starts. For an app booking, check the displayed pickup point, vehicle and registration before getting in. Airport pickup areas may be different from ordinary taxi queues.

If a driver cannot understand the address, ask your hotel to explain it by phone. Keep the hotel number available outside your booking app.

If something goes wrong

If a gate rejects your ticket or code, step aside and use the staffed service point. Show your entry station and payment screen. If you get off at the wrong stop, check the next route before leaving the station.
