Take your first train in China
Book the correct station, prepare your passport and make boarding feel familiar.
Who this is for
Visitors taking an intercity train, especially for the first time. Think about the journey from your hotel to the departure station as well as the train itself.
Before booking
Check the full names of both stations. A city can have several railway stations far apart; “Beijing” and “Beijing South” are not interchangeable. Ask your hotel which station makes sense for your route if you are unsure.
Prepare the original passport you will travel with. China Railway uses identity-linked ticketing. Enter the passenger details carefully and complete any identity checks required by the booking service.
Book and save the details
- Search the actual station-to-station route and intended travel date.
- Review the train number, departure time, station and passenger details before paying.
- Check whether you have a confirmed booking rather than a pending or waitlist request.
- Save the confirmation with the train number and seat information. Keep the original booking service’s support details.
- Read change and refund conditions before accepting them. Use the original booking provider if you later need help with its order.
At the station
Allow a generous margin for finding the correct entrance, security and checking your documents. Use the station and operator’s current instructions; departure time is not the time to arrive at the gate.
Carry the original travel document used for the booking. If an automatic gate does not recognise your passport, look for a staffed lane rather than assuming your ticket is invalid. Match the train number on your confirmation with the departure board, then check your carriage and seat.
If plans change
If you miss a train, go to the official service counter or your booking provider promptly. Staff can explain the options for your ticket; do not assume it remains valid on the next train.
If you notice an incorrect passenger detail, contact the provider before travel. Save the original error message if online verification fails and follow the operator’s current correction process.
Keep your passport and booking accessible during the journey and at the destination. Prepare your city transport for the final leg to your hotel.
